Check out our beginners blog series. Options trading can be a powerful tool for managing risk, generating income, and speculating on market movements. At GKT, we focus on high-probability, math-based strategies to help our community members make informed decisions and minimize risk.

What is the PDT Rule (for US accounts under $25,000)?The Pattern Day Trader (PDT) rule is a regulation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that applies to traders who execute four or more day trades within a five-day trading period in a margin account. The rule applies to traders with a minimum account balance of less than $25,000. A day trade is defined as the purchase and sale of the same security on the same trading day. To avoid being classified as a pattern day trader, limit your trading activity to three day trades within a five-day period, or trade using a cash account. Fortunately, most GKT trades are not day trades, so with careful planning, the PDT rule is less of an obstacle for our community.
-
How much money do I need to start options trading? While there is no set amount required to start trading options, we recommend a minimum of $2,000 to access a margin account with most brokers. This allows you to employ more strategies and make more trades. Keep in mind that it's crucial to trade with only the amount of money you can afford to lose, and always prioritize proper risk management.
-
Are options riskier than stocks? Both options and stocks carry their own unique set of risks and potential rewards, and which one is riskier ultimately depends on an individual's understanding and experience with the two financial instruments. One of the benefits of options is that they allow for greater flexibility and control compared to stocks. Options allow for leverage which if used irresponsibly could cause risks greater than if a stock went to zero.
-
What is the best trading strategy? There is no single best strategy for every situation. The GKT way emphasizes building a trade plan that you understand, using probabilities, math-based strategies, and technical indicators that match market conditions. Be prepared to make adjustments as the market changes, and always understand the strategy before risking your hard-earned money on it.
-
How do I manage risk in options trading?Risk management is a critical aspect of options trading. GKT emphasizes understanding and controlling risk through strategies such as position sizing, diversification, and using defined-risk trades. By trading small and often, you can reduce the impact of individual losses and increase your chances of long-term success.
-
How can I triple my account in a year? While many traders seek huge returns using a small amount of capital, GKT focuses on consistent, mechanical, and risk-appropriate trades for building steady profits. We believe in trading small and trading often, as opposed to "yolo" trading strategies that often result in big returns followed by significant losses.
-
Do I need a fancy computer and 3 monitors? No! Many GKT traders execute trades from their cell phones. Our strategies don't require watching 5-minute candles or making split-second decisions. You don't need a complex setup of monitors and computers to trade with GKT, but those curved monitors are pretty nice!
